    Hold Your Breath...All the Time

I didn't know what Level Five means until one potential candidate from the States explained it to me. Level Five is the worst air quality rating from Environmental Protection Bureau. I guess we are supposed to "hold our breath" all the time when the air quality reaches Level Five.

"Air quality in Beijing hit "hazardous" levels on Monday after a haze of dust from areas southeast of Beijing hovered over the cityf rom Sunday afternoon, said the Beijing Environmental Protection Bureau.

It rated the air quality as level five, the highest on the bureau's classification system, when the city normally issues warnings to elderly people and children to stay indoors and avoid strenuous activities. "

Not aware of the fact that the air quality was at hazardous level, I was in Beijing when the sand storm hit there. Hopefully, running between airport and the hotel doesn't count as "outdoor or strenuous activities".

Ginger: The Jazz singer or the Childhood playmate?

Ginger Zheng is my cousin, whom I haven’t talked to for almost 15 years. We shared the common life path and interests many many years ago. Before I came back to China, I heard she earned her fame as a Jazz singer at Cotton Club which is close to Microsoft office in Shanghai. As soon as I settled down last year, I called the club and checked on the schedule, but to my disappointment, she was no longer there.
Anyhow, recently we got each other’s contact from relatives and she kindly invited me to her performance in Cotton Club. To be honest, I am not Jazz fan, but watching someone who is related to you and who is applauded by the fans is quite exciting experience. In the end, I have to say Ginger has changed so much that I can barely tell she is the girl in the still picture in my memory. I need some time to get use to the new image of Ginger, a singer with a touching voice and a successful businesswoman running a fashion shop. She talked to me briefly during the break and we didn’t finish our conversation before she headed off for something else.

After meeting Ginger again, one question in my mind is “Had you ever thought about what you would end up  decade ago? If you look around today, is that everything the same as you expected?”  To me, the surprise, regardless it is good or bad, is always one of the factors which make the life worth living for...
