February 26 Golden Jaguar in XujiahuiThe Golden Jaguar, which is one of my favorite buffet places in Shanghai, opens a second store across street from our office. And to celebrate the grand opening, they give 30% discount until March 18th. The restaurant is like the Todai restaurant in the States, but it offers more variety in terms of the cuisine style. Check it out yourself!!!

PS Note: The nice pictures raised some doubt about the price, but @126 RMB per person for lunch (or about $16) and 154 RMB for dinner (or about $20), you should be able to treat yourself or your loved ones well occasionally.
Mirroring the shows in the StatesI took a peek of the local Shanghai TV program today and found a new show “Dancing with the host/anchors”, which is in the same format as the US network show “Dancing with the Stars”. The local TV media follows the States TV footprint in an extreme way: here is the list of US program which has a “sister” show in China: l Apprentice è 创智赢家 l American Idol è 超女 l Dancing with the Stars è 舞林大会 l Sex and the City è 好想好想谈恋爱 l Survivor l Who wants to be a millionaire? l 24 l CSI l ER è 妙手人心
I might miss some, but the list goes on and on…. What happened to our own creativity?

The No.1 Chinese celebrity BLOG is appraised at $0, even its page view(or comments) is over 10 mil. I guess the Chinese content is not valued as much as English one.
February 13 Food poisoning again
I got food poisoning third time since I came back to China. The backlist of Chinese food I should avoid is getting longer and longer: Yellow Dirt Snail (黄泥螺)，Yellow alcohol sautéed raw shrimp and crab, certain animal gut.... But I have no idea what caused me to be sick yesterday, I am the only one who almost vomit after the dinner. I am thinking about adding the Yellow Eel (黄鳝) to the backlist since that is the only extraordinary thing I have ever touched…
There are quite some local delicacies which seem to extremely bizarre in most of westerners eyes. Just take last week as example, here are some of items on our menu:

偶然读书发现在十三世纪，中国的宋朝，经济文化各方面在当时的世界独领风骚。 可惜后来，在王安石与司马光的路线斗争中，改革机制皆以废弃，社会停滞不前，国家也为北方的游牧民族所吞没。如果宋朝的先进保持至今，试想华夏当以何种姿态屹立于世。昨日梦呓，偶闻武松和武大郎的一段对话：
武松：大哥，你的“大郎饼屋”生意做得真好，全世界都开遍了。 大郎：可不，咱们“饿猛啃”分店两层楼坐得满满的。据说当地的年青男女常常初次相约在咱们大郎饼屋，真没想到咱们大宋国的穷吃法，跑到那儿成了时尚。 武松：是啊，是啊！意想不到。 大郎：不过也有不顺心的事，俺大侄子刚在“巨笨”开了分店，结果当地天皇把咱儿的烧饼招牌拿来作了国旗。更有甚者，"大郎饼屋"只开了一家，"太郎饼屋"却满地开花。他们拿抽油烟机的废油烙烧饼，严重损害了俺的品牌形象。 武松：这种知识产权保护不利的地方还是不要去了，不够惹麻烦的。 大郎：嗨，甭提了， 还有咱“一大理儿”分店日子也不好过，当地政府天天出台新政策：一会要求烙烧饼不能用肉馅，只能用火腿；一会又禁用葱花，只许用洋葱，我看分明是地方保护主义，要不再也没人吃“皮仨儿饼”了。 武松：做生意真是不容易。 大郎：更可恨的是“大家拿”王国，机构庸肿，官僚作风。一个烧饼 要走十多个政府部门审批，层层盘剥；最后到了顾客手里盖了20多个图章，价格变成了天文数字，消费者怨声载道。
凉风袭来，梦中惊醒，后面的话不曾记得。。。
February 04 What a service!I was buying a cake for my family banquet somewhere in Nanjing Road on the Spring Festival Eve. Right after the bakery sales-lady put the “Happy New Year” sign on the cake, I noticed that there is a string of hair sticking out the whip cream.
“What the heck is that?” I was pointing at the hair, “Do you see the hair on the cake?”
“Oh, let me take a look.” The surprised lady used her red finger nail to pick on the hair thread and eventually pull it out without ruining the shape of the cream. “Now problem is solved.”
With a big relief smile on her face, she handed over the cake to me and called the next person in the line. I was left speechless in the packed crow as the people behind me trying to push me out so they can get one step closer to the counter… |
